Faceless Men

The Faceless Men are a guild of assassins who serve the Many-Faced God from the House of Black and White in Braavos. Their central doctrine holds that death is a merciful gift, to be bestowed only upon those whom the god has marked and chosen, never for personal vengeance, pride, or profit. Initiates must surrender all sense of self, becoming "no one," and learn to wear the faces of the dead through sorcerous rituals that bind the skin of the deceased to their own flesh. The organization is ancient and secretive, its members moving through the world in disguise, their true identities known only to the god they serve.

Doctrine and the Gift of Death

The Faceless Men do not kill for hire in the ordinary sense. Their founder, according to the kindly man who oversees the House of Black and White, was the first to answer the prayers of slaves who wished for death. The gift was given only to those who yearned for it, until one day a slave prayed not for his own death but for his master's. The first Faceless Man granted that prayer, then told the slave that he must give his own life in service to the god. "From that moment, we were two" . This story establishes the order's core principle: they are instruments of death, not judges. "We kill men, but we do not presume to judge them" . When Arya Stark kills the deserter Dareon on her own initiative, the kindly man rebukes her for taking "god's powers on yourself" . Her punishment is to walk in darkness until she understands the difference.

Training and Initiation

Arya's training in A Dance with Dragons illustrates the order's methods. She is made blind for a period, forced to rely on her other senses—hearing, smell, touch, taste—to navigate the temple and its vaults. The waif teaches her to identify coins by touch alone, to detect lies by the play of muscles around the mouth and eyes, and to grind poisons without harming herself. Each morning the kindly man asks if she wants her eyes back; each day she refuses, knowing that to ask would mean being sent away . The training is designed to strip away all personal identity. "You will be no one's daughter, no one's wife, no one's mother. Your name will be a lie, and the very face you wear will not be your own" .

The Face-Changing Ritual

The most distinctive practice of the Faceless Men is the magical acquisition of new faces. In a hidden chamber deep beneath the temple, the walls are lined with the preserved skins of the dead—"a thousand faces" of every age, sex, and expression . When Arya is judged ready for her first assignment, the kindly man cuts her face and applies a new skin over it, warning her that "this will hurt, but pain is the price of power" . As her blood soaks into the leather, it softens and becomes supple, and she experiences a moment of the dead woman's final terror—a fat, bearded face floating before her, the sensation of being choked and beaten . The kindly man instructs her to "breathe out the fear. Shake off the shadows. He is dead. She is dead. Her pain is gone" . The new face is not a mere mask but a true transformation, indistinguishable from natural flesh to any observer.

The First Mission

Arya's first sanctioned kill is a test of her obedience. She is given the face of an ugly, broken-nosed girl and told to kill a man she does not know—a stranger she has never seen before, whom she neither loves nor hates . She watches him for days, learning his habits: he is a merchant who writes binders for ship captains, guaranteeing payment if their vessels are lost. He is guarded and suspicious, tasting his food before he eats. Arya devises a plan that does not involve direct confrontation: she picks the purse of a shipowner who is on his way to pay the merchant, replacing the stolen coin with one of her own. The merchant receives the gold, and soon after, his heart gives out . The kindly man approves: "You have much and more to learn, but it may be you are not hopeless" . That night, she is given back the face of Arya Stark and a robe of black and white, the colors of an acolyte. On the morrow, she is to begin her first apprenticeship with a new face and a new name .
